December update!
about 1 month ago – Wed, Dec 28, 2022 at 02:05:35 PM

Hello everyone!

Amy here with a very important update on the She Series Book:

THE BOOK HAS  BEEN SUBMITTED TO THE PRINTERS!  WOOHOO!

We have already gotten a PDF proof back and are giving it a final look this week. We anticipate giving the printers the go ahead next week to go to a hard copy proof. That should take a few weeks to get printed and shipped, and then Karen and I can make sure the colors and artwork look good. Assuming all goes well, we officially go to print from there.

Please keep an eye out on your inboxes next week; you will be getting emails from Backerkit asking you to lock in your order within 48 hours (this is from the same email address that you got initially asking you to confirm your pledge).

Please note you will have the opportunity to change your address once we get closer to actually shipping the books out.

In the meantime, thank you very much for your patience with this project.  From all of us on the Karen Hallion team, you have our sincerest wishes for a very happy and healthy 2023!

November update!
2 months ago – Mon, Nov 21, 2022 at 10:31:40 AM

Hi everyone!

Amy, Karen's Business Manager, here with some project updates for you.

Becky  and Caitlin recently completed their third round of reviews and  forwarded those on to Brandi to incorporate into a final proof.  In addition to making these changes, Brandi has been working with our  printers regarding final formatting and layout details to ensure the  process goes as smoothly as possible once we deliver the final files.  We made our initial deposit with the printers last month, which means  they have placed our job in their queue and have ordered the paper needed for the book!  For those not aware of some of the global supply chain problems, sourcing paper has been an unanticipated challenge so we're glad to know ours is on the way.  I also got an ISBN number for the  book so we can register it when it's ready.

Going  forward, our final steps include one last review of the book in its entirety, which our editor has assured us won't take more than a weekend, and then we deliver it to the printers.  Once they have the  files in hand, they should be able to give me a more firm print date  which I will be sure to share with you right away!

From  all of us on team Karen Hallion, we want to thank you for your support of this project and your patience as we work hard to bring such a beautiful book to life.

September/October update!
4 months ago – Mon, Oct 03, 2022 at 12:54:50 PM

Amy, Karen's Business Manager, here with apologies that this update didn't get posted last week as I'd planned. Karen and I needed to review some things and unfortunately last week she came down with what seems to be the flu (thankfully not Covid!) so she was finally feeling well enough to talk this morning.

We have  finished the second proofreading round and our graphic designer, Brandi, is currently working on creating a final full proof incorporating those edits. After some discussion, the group has decided that we do need a third review of everything before we submit it to the printers. In addition to this simply being a really large book, there's a ton of small (and sensitive!) historical and biographical details that need to be fact checked - we are committed to getting it right and appreciate  your patience and understanding as we are definitely feeling the  pressure to "just get this done already"!

The  good news is that we have decided to move forward with a US based printer as they can get the books printed and shipped to us much sooner than the overseas counterparts we'd gotten quotes from.  We're also excited to be supporting a US business based in South Carolina!

However, even  with a faster production time, we are now looking at an early spring 2023 print/delivery date for these books, which we wanted to let you all know now.  We realize this is a book many of you had hoped to give to  friends and family for the holiday season and we feel terrible that we won't have it in time.  Karen will be illustrating a downloadable holiday card that we will share next month for anyone who would like it to give to someone to indicate that this book is coming for them early next year.

With that said, I wanted to take this  opportunity to give a shout out to our incredible team again: Becky, our  proofreader, Caitlin our editor, and Brandi, our graphic designer who have all been working so hard the past few months to get this done  right.  All three of them are doing this work freelance on their nights and weekends, on top of working their regular full time jobs and taking care of their kids and pets.  We are so grateful for how committed they are to making a wonderful final product.

Lastly,  I have gotten a number of messages asking about address changes.  As we  get closer to shipping the books, about 4-6 weeks before, you will get an email from 'Backerkit' (who we used to collect surveys about your final orders) asking you to confirm and lock in your shipping address.  Please be sure to add them to your safe senders list so you don't miss that email and I will post about it when it goes out as well.

I  hope everyone is having an enjoyable start to their fall and again, we  appreciate all of your kind comments and support.  If you have any  questions, send a message through Kickstarter and I will get back to you right away.

August Update
6 months ago – Wed, Aug 17, 2022 at 09:35:49 AM

Hi everyone!

Amy here with a quick update for you.

We are currently in the midst of our second proofreading round.  Brandi, our incredible graphic designer, spent the past few weeks incorporating 864 edits in the first round - phew!

Because of its size, we are once again reviewing the book in sections so Brandi can get started on any additional changes while we keep working on reviewing. We do expect this next round to go faster since we had so many edits in the first round.

In the meantime, below are the pages of the book featuring the iconic Nichelle Nichols, who passed away last month; we were very lucky to have Kristin E. Baver write this essay and are so proud to have Nichelle Nichols as part of this book.

Thank you all again for your continued patience and  understanding.  If at any point you have questions or concerns, please  send me a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible.  I will be back with another update in the next few weeks but, for now, back to  proofreading!

July update
7 months ago – Sat, Jul 16, 2022 at 02:05:38 PM

Hi everyone!

Amy here again with a brief and exciting update: WE HAVE A PROOF!  It actually looks like a real book, all 254 pages of it, and it's beautiful.

We broke it into three pieces to make reviewing a little easier and as of this morning, the final third got sent back to our wonderful designer, Brandi, to begin making edits and design changes.  We anticipate this likely will take her a few weeks to wrap up and then we will all give it another final proofread and review.  With a book of this size, we want to be sure we're triple checking everything to get it just right.

Once the second read through is complete, we send it off to the printer at which time, they create a hard copy proof for us and we will give it its final read through, make sure the art colors look correct and that everything meets our standards.

I will be back in a few weeks to let you know how we have progressed. Until then, from the entire team, thank you for your continued encouragement and support.
